Dominican Republic School Service Trip 2022
During Thanksgiving week of 2022, my school and I went on a service trip to the La Romana region of Dominican Republic. For five days we drove to bateys (sugar cane fields) where we would either host a medical clinic with professional doctors from UCONN for displaced Haitians working on the bateys or assist in construction alongside a professional construction team. I spent majority of my days working in the medical clinics, either recording patients blood pressure, which I learned from the professional doctors who accompanied us on the trip, and speaking with patients in Spanish, or packaging medicine per the patient's prescription. I now wonder whether we truly made a lasting impact on the people's lives, feeling as if there is still more that can be done to make a change. For now, I know I was able to at least make a difference in that moment for those who I spoke with and assisted through during my days on the bateys.
